2019 Congressional App Challenge Winners Celebrated

Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester congratulated Daniel Lee of Cab Calloway School of the Arts and Atharva Shanbhag of The Charter School of Wilmington on January 24, as the Delaware winners of the 2019 Congressional App Challenge (CAC), an app competition for students in high school and below.

The team created the app MapShot – an application designed so people can alert others in their communities about violence when they see it themselves through mapping services, alerts, and video tutorials on how to respond to emergencies.

Their apps will also be featured in the U.S. Capitol, on House.gov, and the Congressional App Challenge website.

The Congressional App Challenge was officially launched in 2015 and was created because Congress recognized that STEM and computer-based skills are essential for economic growth and innovation and that the U.S. has been falling behind in these areas. To maintain American competitiveness, it’s crucial that the U.S. invests in our youth today, so they have the needed skills that will prepare them for their careers. For more information about the Challenge, please visit: CongressionalAppChallenge.us. or call Rep. Blunt Rochester’s Wilmington Office at 302-830-2330. Students wishing to submit their apps for next year’s competition can expect the submission window to be open in September of 2020.

The assessments will last approximately two (2) hours and 20 minutes. Applicants will receive an additional email to sign up for a time slot along with detailed instructions on what assessment day will look like in your own home or in-person at CSW.

Two (2)  in-person assessment options will be available on December 12 and January 16. These online assessments will be held under Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Department of Public Health (DPH) regulations;  applicants must wear masks, social distancing will be maintained, and Chromebooks will be sanitized. Support The Charter Fund on Giving Tuesday

Today is Giving Tuesday!

December 1, 2020

Dear CSW Families,

CSW is excited to be nearing a return to in-person learning. In working to accommodate family preferences, provide a safe learning environment for students and teachers, and maintain our nationally recognized level of academic achievement, CSW is projected to incur up to $350,000 in non-budgeted expenses. This includes costs associated with instructional technology, classroom safety, augmented counselling services and more.

The goal for the 2020-21 Charter Fund campaign is to raise $150,000 to support re-entry, the continued delivery of high quality online learning for students who have chosen to remain at home, and other immediate priorities. Support from the CSW community will play an essential role in positioning our students and teachers for safety and academic success.

All Charter Fund contributions will provide direct benefits to students and teachers. For example, we’re aiming to raise $40,000 (equal to $1,000 per classroom) by December 15, 2020 to support the timely acquisition of all equipment and resources needed to provide safe and effective classroom learning environments. All purchases made with Charter Fund contributions will be tracked and all donors will receive periodic updates on the benefits resulting from their collective generosity.

We know every family is different, so please give as generously as you can. Whether it’s $10 to buy a box of masks or $1,000 to sponsor the needs of an entire classroom, every gift – no matter the size – will make a positive impact. Every gift is also tax deductible.

To make a gift, please visit: SUPPORT CSW or complete and return the donor card by mail.

Thank you for your consideration!

Warmest wishes to you and your family,

Dr. Robert Andrzejewski
Interim President

Amherst Scholarships Awarded

Seniors Corri and A’Cora Hickson will be attending Amherst College in Massachusetts next year on full scholarship. Amherst is one of the nation’s most selective colleges with an acceptance rate of only 13%.

Corri and A’Cora were matched through QuestBridge, a powerful platform that connects the nation’s brightest students with leading institutions of higher education and further opportunities. This year, there were 18,000 QuestBridge applicants, 6,400 finalists, and only 1,400 students matched. These young ladies have participated in the Leading Youth Through Empowerment program since they were in 7th grade.

A’Cora will be studying Computer Science and  Corri, Psychology on the pre-med track. The twins were featured in a Special Blue Ribbon School Video and explained their CSW Science Fair project – “The Conversion of Oil to Biodiesel.” The U.S. Department of Education visited the Junior Science Fair in January 2020 and created a video to highlight the event and our Junior Research program. CSW was one of only five high schools in the nation to receive this additional honor.

Justin Xu Honored as Regeneron Scholar

Congratulations to senior Justin Xu for being named one of the top 300 Scholars in the 80th Regeneron Science Talent Search—the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and mathematics competition for high school seniors.  Justin’s project title was “Novel Nanoscale Analysis of the Electronic Structure Basis of Strength and Toughness in Fluoropolymers.”

You may remember Justin from the “Face Shield Initiative” he started in March when the pandemic forced us into Delaware’s State of Emergency.  When PPE supplies were low, Justin and our 3D printing club members printed nearly 300 NIH-approved face shields for area hospitals, nursing homes, VA medical centers, and first responders all over the state.

A listing of all 300 Regeneron Scholars can be found here. Justin was selected from 1,760 students who entered from 611 high schools across 45 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and 10 countries. He will receive $2,000, and The Charter School of Wilmington will also receive $2,000 to use toward STEM-related activities.

The announcement of 40 finalists will take place on January 21 at 12 p.m. Eastern. Finalists will each receive $25,000 and will participate in the finals week program in March, to take place virtually this year due to the pandemic.
