Don’t Miss CSW’s Open House on October 26!

Our Open House for prospective students will be held on Saturday, October 26, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.  If you know any 7th or 8th graders who may be interested in applying to The Charter School of Wilmington, please encourage them to attend our Open House. You do not need to register in advance.

Since 1996, The Charter School of Wilmington  remains an innovative educational force in Delaware, and a national leader in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics curriculum.

Our Junior Research Science project has been hailed by the local science community. This required program provides students with an authentic, in-depth experience in scientific research.

CSW’s signature outreach and volunteer programs (The Buddy Program, The Science Ambassadors and The Jefferson Council) continue to have a positive impact in the community for nearly two decades. Our Jefferson Council was honored by the Jefferson Awards as a 2nd place national winner for their philanthropic contributions to the community.

New partnerships and student/teacher opportunities are explored daily. The collaboration is extraordinary, ensuring CSW stays on an upward trajectory for our students in learning and growing. We provide all students with an exceptional education that prepares them for success in a diverse society. We also focus on developing the whole child.  The Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) offers an annual statewide competition in sportsmanship, which CSW has won the past six years. We have the largest number of high school athletes participating in sports in Delaware.

CSW Honored as 2019 National Blue Ribbon School

The Charter School of Wilmington is being honored as one of 362 National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2019.

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos shared the list of selected schools on Thursday, September 26. Schools were recognized based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.  In Delaware, two other schools were among this year’s designees, Delaware Military Academy and West Park Place Elementary School. All three schools will be attending a recognition ceremony in Washington, DC on November 14 and 15.

CSW was first recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School in 2013. As an Exemplary High Performing School, CSW is among Delaware’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. Since 1982, the U. S. Department of Education has sought out and celebrated great American schools. The National Blue Ribbon School award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content.

Charter President Dr. James P. Capolupo was thrilled with the announcement.

“As a new member of the CSW community, I am grateful to our faculty, staff, administration,  parents, guardians, alumni and Board of Directors for always putting our scholars first and for supporting them around the clock. We look forward to attending the National Blue Ribbon Award ceremony in November and celebrating this honor when we return. We will continue to create a cohesive community, enhance our academic success and innovate our Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics curriculum for the 21st century.

The Charter School of Wilmington is chartered by the Red Clay Consolidated School District.

2019 Congressional App Challenge Winners Announced

Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester congratulated Daniel Lee of Cab Calloway School of the Arts and Atharva Shanbhag of The Charter School of Wilmington on January 24, as the Delaware winners of the 2019 Congressional App Challenge (CAC), an app competition for students in high school and below.

The team created the app MapShot – an application designed so people can alert others in their communities about violence when they see it themselves through mapping services, alerts, and video tutorials on how to respond to emergencies.

Their apps will also be featured in the U.S. Capitol, on House.gov, and the Congressional App Challenge website.

The Congressional App Challenge was officially launched in 2015 and was created because Congress recognized that STEM and computer-based skills are essential for economic growth and innovation and that the U.S. has been falling behind in these areas. To maintain American competitiveness, it’s crucial that the U.S. invests in our youth today, so they have the needed skills that will prepare them for their careers. For more information about the Challenge, please visit: CongressionalAppChallenge.us. or call Rep. Blunt Rochester’s Wilmington Office at 302-830-2330. Students wishing to submit their apps for next year’s competition can expect the submission window to be open in September of 2020.

After considering the health and well-being of our scholars, faculty, staff, and families, The Charter School of Wilmington will be closing Monday, March 16, and Tuesday, March 17.  Faculty, staff, and administration have been planning for the potential impact of a COVID – 19 coronavirus outbreak in Delaware and are prepared to move to “cyber learning.”

Monday and Tuesday will be teacher professional days at home for additional preparation.
On Wednesday, March 18, we will be operating on a “cyber school schedule” listed below.  We will be simplifying our schedule to rotate between two schedule days, not our typical six day rotating schedule.  Each teacher will be holding class slightly differently.  Please have your scholars be on the lookout for communications from their teachers.
On March 18, 20, 24, and 26, faculty will “meet” with their ABCD classes at the following times:
A: 8-8:50 a.m.

B: 9-9:50 a.m.

C: 10-10:50 a.m.

D: 11-11:50 a.m.

On March 19, 23, 25, and 27, faculty will “meet” with their EFGH classes at the following times:

E: 8-8:50 a.m.

F: 9-9:50 a.m.

G: 10-10:50 a.m.

H: 11-11:50 a.m.

The decision to reopen will be re-evaluated during the week of March 23 unless a decision is made by the State sooner. If there is a directive from the Governor’s Office, the State of Delaware or the Red Clay Consolidated School District to remain closed beyond that date,  we will update you by email and our Voice Alert system.
For the latest messages from CSW,  check our Facebook page and Schoology posts in addition to your email.

Please know that as circumstances continue to develop, one thing will remain the same. We will make decisions with the health and well-being of our scholars, faculty, and families first and foremost.
