Student Government Association Honored at Jefferson Awards Foundation Gala

Our Student Government was honored at the Jefferson Awards Foundation Gala on March 12 as the 2017 Lead360 Activation Winner for activating Emma’s Art Kits and successfully making and donating 10,055 art kits to 14 Delaware charities. The CSW community collected crayons, coloring books, drawing pads and donations for this project and students wrote individual notes for each kit.

According to Michele Fidance, the National Director for Delaware and Central Florida, “The project was a labor of love for Henna Castle, one of the SG members, who was the driving force in engaging her entire school to support and make the art kits and was inspired after hearing about the project.” Senior Michelle Shulkov and Student Government co-moderator, Mrs. Jen Toner, also attended the gala with Henna for the presentation.

Summer Reading 2018

$

The Charter School of Wilmington’s English Department is requiring that all students read one book prior to the start of the 2018-2019 school year.  Here is our Summer Reading list!

Please note that AP students (both AP English Language and AP English Literature) will have additional books to read in preparation for the rigors of an AP course. These additional readings will be communicated directly from AP teacher to student.

Hopefully the selections will be both enjoyable and interesting. We encourage parents and the rest of the CSW community to explore these books, as well.

While we are requiring only one book for summer reading, we do hope that students take advantage of summer break to delve into reading by exploring the classics and discovering freshly published works. If you would like some guidance, please contact your English teacher, the English chair or Mrs. Debbie Supplee, the school librarian.

Please have the book in hand for the first day of class.  In addition, the English department recommends annotating the book to promote active reading.

Drop Off/Pick Up Procedures

Beginning each morning at 6:50 a.m.,  Crossing Guards will be outside to direct traffic. They are agents of the New Castle County Police Department, so please follow their directions.

If you are dropping off a student(s),  slow down, be patient and courteous, observe and follow all directions.

Please study this “Traffic Procedures for Car Riders”  map.  When you turn into the parking lot from Dupont Road, all cars should stay to the left, buses to the right.  No student should get out of the vehicle before the “CONE ZONE.”  When you turn into the “CONE ZONE” and there are no cars in front of you,  proceed to the “Morning Drop-Off Begins Here” sign.  Once the line of cars has come to a complete stop, students may exit the vehicle into the “CONE ZONE” and proceed to the building.  Once you have made the turn towards the exit,  form two lines…observing the directional arrows on the road surface.  Two normal size vehicles will fit between the gates with care and caution…please be patient and courteous.

Afternoon Pick Up

Queue lines will form adjacent to the parked cars. Our parking lot staff will be out the first week of school to help our freshmen parents.  Be patient as there is always a 3-5 minute lag from the time the bell rings until students enter the parking lot.  The first couple of weeks will take longer to exit the parking lot,  but it will smooth out, so please be patient!

*** The Cannery Shopping Center is Private Property – No Parking! ***

A Message to Bus Riders

There are a number of bus transportation issues that we have discovered as we begin our partnership with the Red Clay Consolidated School District. Red Clay received a number of addresses that were incorrect.  We are trying to find out how the incorrect information was transferred and then correct it through eSchool. We are also experiencing difficulties with the addresses if the student has two households.  We are working on that solution but it will take a few weeks to get the routes straightened out. In prior years at CSW, we provided out of district bus stops.  Red Clay is not required to have out of district buses and does not have any currently in their fleet of buses. We are working on a couple of solutions that may involve more convenient hub stops.

Where’s

Building Access – Check in at Cab Calloway

During the school day, Red Clay School District policy requires a guest to sign in at Cab’s office and leave his/her driver’s license in the office until the visit ends.  Thank you in advance for keeping our students safe!

Juniors & Seniors: Tissue Donations Requested

We would prefer to spend money on our students instead of paper supplies, so Junior and Senior parents, we need your help! Please send in two boxes of tissues to homeroom next week.  We will distribute them to all the classrooms.  Sophomore and freshmen parents will be asked to send two boxes of tissues in January.  Thank you for helping us extend our budget!

Science Safety Contracts Due September 7

Please review and sign our Science Safety Contract. All students and parents/guardians must read and sign a contract before September 7 and return it to their science teachers.
