Student Government Association Honored at Jefferson Awards Foundation Gala

Our Student Government was honored at the Jefferson Awards Foundation Gala on March 12 as the 2017 Lead360 Activation Winner for activating Emma’s Art Kits and successfully making and donating 10,055 art kits to 14 Delaware charities. The CSW community collected crayons, coloring books, drawing pads and donations for this project and students wrote individual notes for each kit.

According to Michele Fidance, the National Director for Delaware and Central Florida, “The project was a labor of love for Henna Castle, one of the SG members, who was the driving force in engaging her entire school to support and make the art kits and was inspired after hearing about the project.” Senior Michelle Shulkov and Student Government co-moderator, Mrs. Jen Toner, also attended the gala with Henna for the presentation.

Senior Wins Gold Medal at 49th International Physics Olympiad

Senior YuQing Xie is one of only five students from across the U.S. to become a member of the 2018 Traveling U.S. Physics Team. In August, it was announced that the 2018 Physics Team won three Gold and two Silver medals in Lisbon, Portugal.

“Chin Chin”, as he’s known at The Charter School of Wilmington (CSW),  was a recipient of one of the gold medals and he received a perfect score on one of the three theory problems.

Prior to the announcement of the traveling team, the twenty members of the 2018 U.S. Physics Team prepared for the mentally grueling exams and lab tests they would face at the 49th International Physics Olympiad held July 21–29 in Lisbon, Portugal, where student scholars from 133 nations tested their knowledge in physics, competing with the world’s best.

The exam process for the competition began last January with 6,500 students participating in the F=ma exam.

“Chin Chin has a first-rate mind with the rare ability to take a very complex physics problem and reduce it very quickly to its fundamental concepts,” notes CSW Physics teacher, Dave Stover.

Summer Reading 2019

The Charter School of Wilmington’s English Department is requiring that all students read one book prior to the start of the 2019-2020 school year. Here is our Summer Reading list!

Seniors are reading a collection of short stories for their reading assigment. You can download the PDF here or stop by the Main Office for a copy.

Please note that AP students (both AP English Language and AP English Literature) will have additional books to read in preparation for the rigors of an AP course. These additional readings will be communicated directly from AP teacher to student.

Hopefully the selections will be both enjoyable and interesting. We encourage parents and the rest of the CSW community to explore these books, as well.

While we are requiring only one book for summer reading, we do hope that students take advantage of summer break to delve into reading by exploring the classics and discovering freshly published works. If you would like some guidance, please contact your English teacher, the English chair or our school librarian.

Please have the book in hand for the first day of class. In addition, the English department recommends annotating the book to promote active reading.
